Silvertone 1484 (Twin Twelve) amp and Cab at GC in Marietta GA for $399

There are two 1484 Twin Twelve amp and cabs at Guitar Centers right now - this one in Marietta GA and another in Matthews NC for $499. This one has non-original speakers in the cab so it is at a lower price. Per usual GC is selling a very similar 1484 at one of their other locations for $1299!

There is no rhyme or reason to how GC prices used gear from location to loocation so I always keep an eye on their inventory across the country. You can find Gibson Les Paul Jrs for $800 at one shop and for $600 at another - same year, same condition - just different stores. And few people seem to know that GC will ship a guitar anywhere in the country for about $30.

Now shipping a Silvertone 484 head and cabinet - that is another story.

Harmony H79 Electric 12 String in Chicago-Indiana area for $500

Look at this beautiful RARE Harmony H79 in Chicago-Northern IN for $500. Wow! From what I've heard these play nicely and sound great! Though I've never had the pleasure of owning one. The headstock design, fit and finish look very nice and it even has a fully adjustable 12 saddle bridge to keep it in tune (that's more than I can say for any of my Harmony Rockets lol!)

BTW the seller says early 60's but these were made from 1967 - 1970.

Here is another rare and beutiful find - a Harmony H79 electric 12 string. These guitars have a good rep as solid dependable players and from what I've heard over the years they sound great! I'd love to at least play one some day. It even has a real 12 saddle adjustable bridge to keep it in tune - that's alot more than I can say for a harmony Rocket (lol!)

Fender Super 60 tube combo in Chicago area for $220

Say what you want about the Red Knob Fenders but they've been played by a lot of pros over the years (including Clapton who recently donated a Super 60 and a Red Knob Twin to the Crossroads Antigua Auction at Butterfields).

I don't need to go into the details here - there are lots of conversations about these amps on the web - but I always say the same thing about Red Knobs: treat them like a SINGLE CHANNEL amp and you won't be disappointed. Just find a clean solid tone that is mostly based on pushing the ouput tubes and get your distortion with a pedal or by adjusting your guitars volume. That's it. BTW these are heavy little amps and they do get loud.

BTW - Take that Crate speaker and throw it in the trash - get a Jensen or a Celestion Vintage 30 and I guarantee this amp witll rock.

Here's my Fender Super 60 amplifier. It's all tube and made in the USA (MIA). Works perfectly but has some tolex wear and minor tolex loss, two knob shafts are slightly bent (does not affect performance) and a 90 watt (180 watt peak) @ 8 Ohms 12" Crate replacement speaker.

I no longer have a rehearsal space and it's far to loud for my apartment...plus I'm a keyboard guy.

$220 FIRM

Very rare (but still overpriced) SPETEL Russian Made Marshall Clone in Reading PA for $700

The price on this amp is too high to qualify as a deal but I wanted to highlight it because these are rare and most of us will never see one. The SPETEL was a Russian clone of the Marshall JCM800 series all PTP hand-hired in the 1980's. These get very loud but even with the Master Volume they don't get modern distortion without an overdrive pedal - but if you crank them way up with a pedal they will apparently melt your face.

SOVTEK's are more common and have some big fans but these are a lot more rare.

Valco made combo amp in NYC for $300

A reader brought this listing to my attention. It's an interesting combo amp that appears to be a cross between a Supro Trojan and a Harmony 525 Bass amp. I'd suspect this was labeled as a National but I could be wrong since National used the gold and black faceplate look. It is an all tube amp but could have a solid state rectifier (as many of the Valco amps did by 1967). The Trojan had a similar chassis layout but had the Blue Supro Faceplate and Lightning Logo - a Harmony 525 was a bigger amp with 6L6 power and a 15 inch speaker but with smiliar cosmetics to this.

Possible Supro/Valco tube amp in New York-Western Mass. for $375

I don't recognize this particular amplifier but the two tone cabinet and Tube layout resemble a Valco made Harmony or Supro from the 1960's. Note that this amp has 8 tubes. The pic looks like a dual 6V6 or dual EL84 amp with a 6x4 rectifier and 5 preamp tubes. That's a pretty fancy tube circuit.

The amp has 7 knobs and I'd expect it is a two channel amp with Vibrato. The speaker is definitely a replacement - looks like a Jensen C12Q.

I would expect this to be a great sounding amplifier - expecially if it has original trannie's, NOS or original tubes and a recent cap job. But there is only one way to find out: anyone live in Western Massachusetts??

Something different - but related - Jimmy Page rules the Universe on his vintage Danelectro.

First off, I'd like to thank all the readers who've posted such nice supportive comments here in my blog. I really appreciate the nice words and it keeps me motivated to dig deeper and do a better job.

To that end, I will be expanding this Blog to make it part of a regular guitar WEBSITE called VINTAGE GUITAR HUNT. That site is not up yet but hopefully I will have it going in a month or two. I am looking for a good web designer to help me build it so that it includes a "VIntage Guitar Search Engine" feature and a "Members Forum" section for reviews and to share information with each other. I am doing this in response to the fact that HARMONY CENTRAL has really taken a dive in the past few years and I don't think many of us can use that as a good resource anymore. It's really a shame because that was a great site for many years but it's totally changed into a very commercial website with less user input so maybe we can build something decent for Vintage Guitar Players and Collectors to share and use together.

Wish me luck - and any input, comments, suggestions etc are appreciated.

- Jim Christopher

OKAY - as a special treat here are two great videos of JIMMY PAGE playing his vintage Danelectro DC-2. I can't make up my mind what's cooler - that Jimmy gets such a mind altering great tone out of this little Masonite Guitar - or the way he just picks up the same guitar with the same DADGAD tuning 30 years later and sounds just as good as the day he recorded it.

It doesn't get much more inspiring than this...

Here is LED ZEP playing KASHMIR live in the Mid 1970's

And here is Jimmy teaching the song to Jack White and The Edge. This movie, IT MIGHT GET LOUD is such a delight for lovers of the Electric Guitar and the real treat is seeing how much Jimmy Page loves to play - it is an absolute delight every moment he touches the instrument.

1970's Ventura Goldtop MIJ semi-hollow 335 style in Tallahassee for $300

Obviously $300 for a Ventura guitar is not a crazy cheap deal but I have to say I have never seen one of these "gold top" ventura's before and it looks pretty darn nice. This would definiely qualify as a "Lawsuit" model -take a look at the headstock, keystone tuners, witch hat knobs, nice mahogany back and neck, ivory binding, etc. they were going all out on this guitar. Of course, it is not a set neck, it is a bolt on. And I can't vouch for those pickups in any way - but this is an unusual find so definitely worth taking a look. Even the case looks pretty darn nice for a 35 year old Japanese import model.

This is one beautiful guitar. It comes with orignal, gold, plush-lined case. As you can see, two of the knobs are missing, but this is no big deal. This was a Made in Japan guitar, and it's solid, beautiful wood. The pick-ups are outstanding - never seen anything like these. Guitar has had set-up done professionally, but you might want to adjust to your playing style. Mother of pearl inlay at the fret markers and on the name on the head stock. $300 gets it. Thanks for your interest. Call 459-5329 to see.

Fender Japan Squire Wayne's World Strat in SF bay area for $300

I actually own one of these original Wayne's World Strats and it is a pretty nice guitar. Fit and finish is typical of Japan in the period - i.e. very good. And the necks on these are the same as the 1962 RI necks which are sweeeeet. Check out the deep dark nearly ebony fretboard on this axe - just like mine. So different than the light brown fast growth Indonesian Rosewood we see on all the lower and mid range guitars today.

Fender Japan E-Series Squier Strat in Los Angeles for $275

The E series (early 1980's) Japan Strats are going way up in price - players realize that with the chaos at Fender USA and loss of the Fullerton Plant in the purchase from CBS many of the Strats were being built in Japan in the mid 1980's. The Japanese guitar makers set a high standard (there is a story about the USA builders nearly crying when they saw how good the Japanese models were). Anyway it all adds up to some darn nice guitars.

Note: It is rumored that the only dfference between the Squier models and the Fender models in 1984-85 was that the Fender models used actual USA made hardware and pickups (shipped over from California) versus the Squiers that used MIJ hardware and electronics.

Here is an E-series MIJ Squier Strat for sale in LA at a very good price.

Extremely Rare Dallas Rangemaster Tube combo amp in Los Angeles area for $475

Note to new readers - I am not selling ths amp - I am only reposting the ad in my blog. - JC

I cannot vouch for the tone of this amp and neither can many other people because it is extremely rare to find one here in the United States. Dallas Arbiter is the company that made the original Rangemaster Overdrive boxes in the 1960's and they still exist today. But I never even knew they made tube amplifiers. Cosmetically this one appears to be a sort of Marshall 18 watt 2x10 clone. But those ECG86 tubes are designed to put out 4 watts each at 250V on the plate - so it would have to be a very creative circuit to make this as loud as a Marshall Bluesbreaker. Goodmans are heavy duty British speakers that at one time came in Vox amps. These amps are so rare they are not even collected as far as I know - so this falls into the "who knows?" category but could be a cool amp. Could be very Vox AC15-ish or maybe like a Marshall Town & Country. Only one way to find out. Hopefyully it is in good working shape becuase you can forget about finding a schematic for it anywhere - good luck.

Note the step transformer - this amp is probably designed to run on British spec AC "mains" voltage so you need the transformer for standard US current.

Here is a very good/excellent condition Marshall combo. This is a very good sounding LOUD amp. I bought this in the same condition as it is in last year. Its too much power for me and I've only played it 10 times. I like it, it just doesn't get used and I'm quite sure there is someone out there who will use it like it should be. When I purchased this amp in the fall, I had my good friend Frank at Manella Guitars go through it and clean it well because it is about 20 years old. The tubes are good and strong and should last a good while, as well as the speaker is in good shape. As far as the physical shape of the amp imho I'd say its a 9.5. I also had a custom made tuki cover made for it. Included with the amp is the factory footswitch that works perfectly. This is the perfect little gigging amp, guitar in 1 hand amp in the other and out the door, and its a hard rocker. Thanks for looking

Old Kraftsman (Kay) acoustic In Bloomington IN for $50

the seller of this guitar is apparently a bit confused (I am being generous) saying that this guitar was made by Gibson for Kay. But it is certainly an old Kraftsman, though I doubt it's anywhere near as old as he says (1923) it is probably from the late 50's or early 1960's. the black tuner knobs do indicate a fairly older guitar so that is a good sign.

THis is a 1923 Old Kraftsman guitar built by gibson for the Kay guitar company and sold in the 1923 speiggle magazine. This is a rare guitar very rare. Take a look online and google it, you will find maybe two of these acoustics and for a very high price. This one is a project guitar. You could string it and play it now though the action would be very high. It needs to have some work done on it and could be done at any utherie shop or if you know what you are doing you could work on it. There is nothing like the sound of 100 year old wood on an acoustic guitar. Please look close at the pics and do not reply if you are expecting a new guitar. This is a project guitar or a very nice display piece. Let me know if you are interested.

Epiphone ET-290 Crestwood in Corvallis for $350

These japanese made Crestwoods are nice solid guitars and this Cherry Burst is the prettiest of the finishes. I played one exactly like this at the Guitar Center Vintage Room in Hollywood a few years back and they were asking $550 for it at the time. Unlike the original Wilshire that it is a nod to these are bolt on necks - but nice and solid and they rock out pretty well too. Like the seller says - like a cross between an SG and a Les Paul. The pickups are not stellar - but definitely acceptable.

Vintage Epiphone ET-290
Vintage 1970s Epiphone ET-290. This is NOT the reissue. This guitar sounds fantastic, the action is low, intonation good, plays in tune, overall a very nice guitar. There’s some scratches and chips in the paint but nothing extreme, it looks pretty damn good for being over 40yrs old. Epiphone used to make a very nice guitar and this is a great example of one. It’s a unique guitar and It plays and feels like a cross between an SG and a Les Paul. The Humbuckers are warm and handle distortion very well. This was made in Japan at the Matsumoku factory that was known for producing excellent guitars. The original Epi advertisement says this-

"ET-290, Deluxe professional solid body with unique Epiphone design in cherry sunburst finish. Two gold plated Humbucking pickups, two volume and tone controls with toggle switch. Gold plated Deluxt stop tailpiece, multi-adjustable bridge, and machine heads." (The original price in 1970 for a ET-290 was $220.00)

This was the highest priced model they sold at the time. I have enjoyed playing this guitar immensely but just bought a Les Paul and can’t justify keeping one that won’t be getting much use. May be willing trade for a vintage tube head or 4x12 cab. I will not ship and It’s cash or trade only. $350.00 I just dropped the price $100 from the original post and am firm on it. This guitar is worth anywhere from $500.00- $650.00 easy, they go on Ebay for that all day long. Theres two beat up ones of a lower model at Centaur Guitar going for $500.00-

ne monster. It is basically the same as a Silvertone 1482 in a larger box with a more heavy duty speaker - and these babies growl, honk, shout and scream like the great vintage lil' tube amp you always wanted.

A 1965, Mongomery Wards Airline 62-9013a (1), tubed guitar amplifier, in very good working condition. The power cable is still nice and pliable. Amp cranks out good quality and loud sound output, produces minimal hum. Vibrato intensity and speed works flawlessly. All original control knobs are in place. I don't get much "scratchy" noises when turning up the volume, usually a typical problem with older amps, when a volume control or rheostat gets old with carbon deposist in their electrical contacts..

The original partial back cover was removed many moons ago, to custom install speaker-to-headset output plug. The back cover has been misplaced and cannot be found. Amp is a bit dirty, but a Collector can easily clean it up with a little TLC. There are no operational problems noticed with the amp. I am firm at $350, please, serious inquiries only, absolutely no low-balls.
