Happy Ending to my Texas Guitar Ripoff

Here are the pics of my latest cherished posession - 1956 Harmony H44 Stratotone - 100% original including case and original ultra-skinny neck strap.

And the pic at the bottom is the original pic That the initial seller emailed to me of the guitar after he posted it on Craigslist in Texas.

*******************************************

Well, I thought it was a lost cause but thanks to an honorable "guitar reseller" in Texas I eventually got the Guitar I was scammed out of - my 1956 Harmony H44 Stratotone neck thru electric in Copper.

The identical guitar showed up on eBay and I contacted the seller and after explaining that I'd paid the owner for it and he never sent it to me he boxed it up and shipped it to me - all I had to do was reimburse him for the money he lost.

Yippee! It arrived today and it is unbelievable! They are everything they are rumored to be (if you like fat necks and awesome tone).

I will post pics when i get the chance. - Jim C

Nice 1965 Gretsch 6150T combo tube amp on eBay for $389 BIN

Very desireable little amp in nice original condition. These are similar to a Vibro Champ but much much harder to find and the BIN on this one is a decent price. Personally, I'd take one of these over a Champ any day of the week. Seller is a guitar shop so this should be a safe deal. Check it out:

1965 Gretsch 6150T Guitar Tube Amplifier 6150 Tremolo

1965

Gretsch

6150T

The 6150 series was probably Gretsch's best-selling and longest lasting small amp. Similar to Fender Champs in many ways, they remain particularly loved and sought after by harp players and for studio work. This one is equipped with a tremolo circuit which is still functioning very well.

This amp puts out about 5 watts of vintage tube tone through it's original 8" speaker. It was built by Valco in their Chicago facility in 1965. It has the classic Gretsch patterned tolex with white piping around the front edge of the amp. Tubes include 2-12AX7 (preamp/tremolo), 1-6V6 (power), and 1-5V3 (rectifier). It has two inputs, standard and treble, single volume and tone controls and the Tremolo control knob. There is a tremolo footswitch input along with it's pilot light and fuse holder on the chrome control panel.

This vintage amp still looks good and sounds good. Make it yours today!

Fender Stage Lead II Solid State Combo in Hollywood for $100

I am not recommending we all rush out and buy Fender 1980's solid state amps. However, that said, this is a good deal on a big powerful and well reviewed SS Amp. The Stage Lead II's came out in 1985-86 and these are big heavy (80 lbs) LOUD stage performance amps with lots of tone options including a very nice Fender clean sound. I think these were made in Japan. They are basically like Solid State versions of a Fender Twin Reverb.

I believe these Lead II's put out over 100 watts so if you are looking for some serious high volume onstage sound reinforcement - or you want an amp to leave at the practice space or as a backup/2nd amp this is a good choice.

Real Spring Reverb too so this can be a good basic Surf amp.

1961 Epiphone Caballero Acoustic in Brunswick GA for $250

Very cool little Mahogany Epiphone acoustic - just like an LGO or LG1 - excellent fingerpicking and blues guitars.

I've never seen that type of headstock on a USA Epiphone - but this certainly looks like a USA guitar to me. Sounds like it has some minor issues - not perfect - but what a deal.

Up for sale is my vintage Epiphone FT-30 Caballero all mahogany acoustic guitar. This is the same guitar as the Gibson LG-0.

Has a rare 4 digit serial number (8510) and metal Epiphone headstock badge, which dates it to 1960-1961.
Plays well with a nice full sound for a small-bodied guitar, which is what these guitars are famous for.
All solid mahogany. Good action. No buzzing. Frets in good shape. Neck is straight. Good original tuners. Stays in tune nicely.
Comes with original chipboard case. Has plenty of checking in the finish, which is to be expected in a 50 year old instrument.
There are a few tight age cracks in the body, but they do not affect it's playability or structural integrity. Also, it does have one spot on
the back in the lower bout area that looks to be a stable old repair. I have had this guitar for over 5 years and it looks and plays just
as good (or better) now as when I first got it.

Right now these guitars are going for $350 to $850 on eBay.
I am offering mine for sale locally at a lower price just to avoid the hassle of packing and shipping and eBay fees. Price: $250.

2000 Gibson Les Paul Special in Jacksonville FL for $600

I have one of these gloss finish Les Paul Specials in Red - mine is a 1998 - and the 498T pickup in the bridge is the way to go IMO. Gives plenty of modern bite but nice and clean when you roll back the volume. I like the Special over the Studio any day of the week - easier to hold, wear and play - but still rocks the Casbah - but that's just my opinion.

Burns 1964 Split Sound Jazz in Kansas City KS for $650

Nice deal on a highly collectible guitar if you are into the Burns line. This is a real London Built Burns Factory Guitar - from the Ampeg distribution period (not Baldwin).

I am a big fan of the Burns guitars aesthetically though as players they have their fans and detractors. Don't ever expect to instantly love a vintage guitar until you've owned and played one for awhile - they all have individual quirks.

Lyle 5102T in Kansas City KS for $150

These guitars were very popular in the 1960's and appear under names like Ventura, Aria, Univox, Bruno and Lyle. They were all made at the same Matsumoku factory and they are all pretty much the same - the pickups usually being the main difference between brands (I personally like the Univox).

I always try to emphasize to newbies that these are really not ES-335 type guitars because they don't have a solid tone block down the center or a stop tailpiece. I also think that as a general rule the single coil Japanese pickups sound better than the humbuckers during this period.

This Lyle 5102T guitar is in decent shape for its age. Manufactured from approximately 1965-1972. Few scuffs and missing one tuner gear cover. Pickups a bit lose. Could use a little TLC and minor repair. 2 volume and 2 tone controls, 3 position toggle switch, adjustable bridge. This guitar has a bolt on neck, and a pretty robust construction. Lyle Model 5102T semi-hollow body electric guitar marketed and distributed by L.D. Heater (L stands for Lyle) manufactured by Matsumoku out of Japan. This guitar was styled somewhat after the Gibson 330, 335, 345, and 335 electric guitar series in the late 60's and 70's. The Norlin Corporation owned both L.D. Heater and Gibson back then.

Alamo Jet tube combo in San Diego for $100

This is the later hybrid version of the Alamo Jet. Note that it does not have the two 12AX7 tubes on the right side of the chassis. The preamp and Reverb are solid state and it has a 5y3 rectifier and a 6V6gt power tube. The Carvin Ceramic Speaker will make this more robust - if slightly less efficient than the Alnico's that came stock. $100 is a good price overall for this.

SOLD - Nice set neck Guyatone w/ 1964 DeArmonds in Long Beach CA for $300

SOLD - This guitar went very fast - Jim C

UPDATE: I found out this is a Guyatone LG60 - circa 1959. You can see pics of it's brother the Guyatone LG50 in the hand of Hank Marvin (Shadows) and Ringo Starr (apparently a drummer of some sort).

These have very fat necks (good for slide) and the original pickups were supposedly weird and a bit of a problem so this one would be a better more playable axe than when it was new. There is an LG60B on ebay right now for $1300 but I doubt that is a current fair market price. With the changed pickups this is less collectible but might be more desirable.

******************

This looks like a very cool guitar - especially for slide or retro blues etc. Looks to be all maple, maybe semi hollow/chambered or maybe solid. It is a set neck which is a big plus and those DeArmonds look like a perfect fit.

In my imagination this would sound just like a Harmony H44 or Kay Vanguard, bright and present with nice sustain. But of course you'd have to play it to find out. I love the 3 position switch - just like a 1950's Chicago built guitar.

Trio of Les Paul, Duesenberg and Fender Super Sonic 60 for $3150 in Ventura CA

This seller has some very nice high end gear and he is not joking when he says it is a great deal. Retail on the Supersonic alone is $1300 and that Doozie goes for about $2500 new. If you buy the three together you are basically getting a very good deal on the guitars and the amp for free.

Of course $3150 is a lot of money but these are not items for the casual player. They are all top of the line pro instruments (Clapton often plays out of a Super Sonic live).

FYI - These Les Paul Limiteds have thick 1950's style necks with modern pickups and special color high gloss finishes.

Yamaha Studio Lord Les Paul in Montgomery Alabama for $480

The Studio Lord is a nice Les Paul copy that was made in Japan by Yamaha. There are several versions SL370, SL450, etc. These are serious guitars - hard to find here in the USA. The original yamaha "Lord Player" is the most desirable but they rarely turn up for sale. This one may or may not have a set neck - I don't know what "Griff is on bolts" means but the open book headstock shows it is a 1970's model.

There are some beautful Burst versions of these guitars out there but this "Black Beauty" style is pretty cool as well.

Bought it 3 years ago directly from JAPAN. But Ive lost interest in playing electric guitar, coz didnt have time. This is a classic guitar, 70th Japanese les paul. 22 frets, 2 YAMAHA humbucks, griff is on bolts. BLACK finish. There are some scratches/dents on it. But generally very good for its year.. frets are good too. The only thing it needs is a new screw for front humbuck(doesnt sit tightened) or something customized.. But it doesnt affect the amazing sound of it. MADE IN JAPAN.. Price 480$ is probably negotiable. My cell is 334..******** . Please text in advance

Goya (Sweden) Classical acoustic in Chicago area for $80

There is a bit of a cult around the Swedish made Goya's based in part on the legendary care and meticulous service of the original Levin guitar factory in Sweden. there is a list of serial number available on line to help date this guitar if you are interested at http://www.whitetreeaz.com/vintage/goya.htm

Martin moved all Goya manufacturing to Japan in 1977 but Goya's were being made in Sweden and sold inthe United Stated by Herschmann and Kustom as early as 1955.

I believe this is a Goya, there is no sticker ... though it does say "Made in Sweden" inside and the rest of my guitars are of the period which Goya was around. I also have a Goya (1958 G-10) listed.

I will let this one go for a low price for two reasons ...
1. The top has a crack in it, one which can be repaired and not even noticeable, but I won't fix it so I will lessen the price. It doesn't effect the playability or tone AT ALL.
2. It has no name, tag, or sticker. It does however have a serial. So lets say you love to research vintage guitars ... and this becomes your treasure. Guess what, you only paid $80 for it!!!

Cash and carry only.
No scammers.

Weiss acoutsic in Chicago for $100

I am always interested in posting a guitar brand or model I've never seen before - this Weiss is one of those. While this looks similar to many Kay and Harmony birch bodied student guitars it is not exactly the same so it may be a unique model.

Amazingly enough I think this is actually a copy of a Harmony - note the attempt at the faux tiger-stripe finish so common on other Chicago built student guitars.

1964 Airline Electric w/ amp in case for $650 in SF Bay area

These are related to the Airline Model 7214 but they have two pickups instead of one. I know that this costs a bit more than a comparable Silvertone 1448 amp-in-case model but it is also less common. These Airline's were made by Supro (Valco) and it is definitely a short-scale guitar - the neck joins the body at the 12th fret - but you get a pair of killer Supro/Airline pickups and this guitar and case both look to be in extremely good collectible condition.

A very cool thing about these particular guitars is they have a built in tremolo circuit that runs off a battery under the pickguard and is trigered by the little switch below the strings. No idea how it sounds but still kinda cool.
