Harmony H-162 acoustic in Van Wert, OH for $125

The guitar this seller is offering looks just like my Harmony H-162. I highly recommend this model as an "under the radar" vintage USA made acoustic. The tops are solid spruce and the sides and neck are solid mahogany (not laminated). They also have nice tortoise-shell type body binding and pickguards.

I can't vouch for the playability of this particular guitar but I just picked up my H-162 this morning and couldn't get over the nice feel and smooth tone and playability even compared to my most expensive Martin Acoustic (approx $2K).

I see lots of nice vintage guitars for sale in Minnesota - must be some serious tone hounds in that part of the country.

Here is a seller offering a sweet Harmony H54 Rocket - the single cutaway version with mustache pickups - for $375. All that this one seems to need is a new pair of cupcake knobs. Not that hard to find.

I particularly like the fully bound neck on this Rocket. You don't see a lot of single cutaway Rockets with fully bound necks. I think that would make this either a '67 or '68.

Here's a vintage 60's Harmony Rocket H-54 serial #3959. Plays and sound great!!! Neck is straight, No fret wear, action is very comfortable.
A good single cutaway Rocket with the better 'moustache' pickups. No structural issues at all. Has the fantastic 'trestle' bracing under bridge ( like the Gretsch 6120) which reduces the feedback tendancies and improves tone. Electronics function very well. I just plugged it in today and it plays and sounds great! 651-***-**** Terry

This seller is offering a nice ratty looking (but great sounding) Harmony H306A for only $225. Don't expect this to be as loud as a Fender Deluxe but you will probably like the cool raunchy biting tone of this 15 watt single 12 in combo.

FYI - Personally, I wouldn't change anything cosmetic on this amp other than adding some cream colored Chickenhead knobs (which are available for super cheap on eBay). Ratty looking amps always sound better than the pretty ones IMO.

Silvertone 628 / Harmony H1200 in Memphis for $275

You don't see these guitars come up for sale very often.

Produced for only a couple of years (1954-1958) the H-1200 is one of the nicest acoustic guitars to come out of the Harmony Chicago factory. A solid spruce top and solid maple body - beautiful Rosewood fretboard (most likely Brazilian) and inlaid MOP markers and fancy acetate headstock overlay.

This probably has about the same dimensions as a modern Taylor 815 jumbo cutaway but don't expect a thin neck on this one - it was the 1950's after all - it should be nice and wide and thick - perfect for Jazz or beefy blues.

Harmony Jumbo Black Acoustic in Bentonville AK for $69

I cannot seem to identify this model Harmony Acoustic the seller is offering. It has a jumbo shape like a Sovereign but is not a 1204 or 6364 (or even a Black 162). It has the 50's-60's Harmony logo and Treble Clef and "Steel reinforced neck" but no Made in USA stamp. To make things more confusing it has what appears to be one of the wooden tailpieces Harmony only used from 1941 through 1945 and it also has a Zero Fret (WTF!??). Is this an Asian reissue?

I am totally confused. I suppose this could be a "mongrel" (i.e. a non-stock guitar from various model parts) but if anyone can help identify it please let us know. - JC

Jack says he covers it in paper for "personal reasons" but I am sure it is to reduce feedback from the high volumes he likes to play on stage (since this is a fully hollow guitar).

Guitar is in good condition as you can see, stays in tune and the pickup works as it should. The guitar does have some things to note. Tuners are not original, screw was added to neck, a bit of binding separation and the second to last fret will buzz if you use the lower frets past 8. If you removed the last 2 frets it would solve the buzz and since they are never used, why not. This would make a great slide guitar since the pickup works great!! Please call ***-***-****

This eBay seller made a decent video of this Kingston copy of an Eko Rokes. he has a ton of guitar videos on Youtube (his Youtube log is "DrowninginGuitars" LOL) The Original Italian made Eko's are very hard to find but the fact is they weren't the greatest sounding or playing guitars in the world (IMO some of the Japanese Copy versions of Italian Vox and Eko guitars are actually as good or better).

Looks like these guys are a vintage gear shop - hope they don't mind me listing their address here (can't imagine they would mind - free advertising).

This looks to me like one of the later "solid State" Silvertone speaker cabinets but it should still work and sound great for any Silvertone tube amp head (like a 1483 or 1485). Just be sure to check the minimum ohm ratings for a decent match.

Fender 70's Silverface Deluxe Reverb amp in Bakersfield CA for $600

These 1970's Silverface Deluxe Reverbs are great mid-sized amps. If I could only own one guitar amp and it had to serve every purpose this would be the one for me. Small enough for the apartment and they break up nicely at a reasonable volumes - but they have the nice clean Fender chime and are loud enough for small club gigs and you can mike them for bigger gigs. Add a pedal for 70's crunch.

$600 is a good price - less than what most of the Fender Reissue DRRI's go for.

Baldwin Burns Split Jazz circa 1965

This is the newest addition to my stable of guitars and I am very excited. A Burns Split Jazz labeled Baldwin from sometime around 1965. This guitar has a thick neck similar to a 1950's Strat but with a zero fret and the pickups sound better than I expected. It has a very full rich sound especially in the "Jazz" position (my favorite). The infamous "Wild Dog" setting is actually quite basic (reminds me of the out-of-phase position on my Fender Mustang).

The real treat for me is playing this guitar through my Germanium Fuzz Pedal (I use a weird homemade pedal called a "Nut Fuzz"). This guitar generates a particularly cool fuzz tone that seem to incorporate a lot of the octave and ring modulation sounds all the way up and down the neck. It has its' own unique sound and it really has a legit retro vintage vibe to it. Not really a blues guitar (I have plenty of those), the Burns makes me immdiately want to play in that mid-60's instrumental guitar style of the Shadows/ Ventures or more recently a band like the Raconteurs.

These are quite heavy guitars - at just under 10 lbs it is about the same or slightly heavier than my 1979 Ash Strat. Though it is quite comfortable to hold and play.

Note: I bought this guitar from the Guitar center in Santa Clara CA when they suddenly dropped the price.

Regal Gondola Stencil guitar in Charlotte for $75

I emailed the seller of this post and he sent me pics of the 3 guitars. One appers to be a Regal vintage parlor guitar with a nice gondola stencil in excellent shape. The Uke is a Norma which is basically a toy. But he is willing to sell the Uke and the Regal together for only $75.

These Regals are not great players but they are as good as any other ladder braced birch bodied guitar of the period. Most modern players would use these for slide or just for the joy of having a 70 year old guitar around the house LOL!

When I bought this guitar 5 years ago everything was original. Not pristine, but original. When I first got it setup at World of Strings in Long Beach they put a shim in the neck, new tuners and upgraded the pots. Plays great. This year I replaced the bridge with the Hipshot piano bridge. Really helped to adjust intonation, plus it brought great new tone/resonance/sustain to the guitar. I also had a complete refret done on the guitar. So that's all the work that has been done. You'll never find another guitar like this. Need to find this guitar a new home in the hands of a proper rocker.

Comes with a nice gig bag with plenty of pockets for strings, picks, cables, tuner, notebooks, etc...

Rare Marshall 2150 100 watt combo in Carson CA for $500

This seller is offering a rare circa 1978-79 Marshall 2150 Combo. These are part of the JMP series amps that includes the Super Lead 100. This is about as much of an amp as Marshall ever tried to fit in a compact 1x12 combo. Master Volume is "Post Phase Inverter" which some owners of this amp say is capable of giving it a nice vintage Bluesbreaker tone. Opened up at 6 or 7 it is classic JMP series crunch. That EV-12L should handle the 100 watts but I'd expect you could use this to drive another speaker cabinet with ease. You don't see these amps very often.

1971 Gibson SG Special w/ P90's in Wilkes-Barrre PA for $1099

Pete Townsend fans alert!! This 1971 SG Special looks just like the ones that Pete Townsend used to play (and destroy) from 1968 thru 1972 before he switched over to the Polaris White version. Luckily the prior owner kept the wraparound tailpiece instead of replacing it with a stop tailpiece and tunematic thus making this guitar 100% original minus the missing Vibrola tailpiece (which Townsend would also remove from all his SG's since he just bent the neck to give it his signature Vibrato). The 2nd pic show's Pete in concert 1969.

I just stumbled across this listing online and thought it was worth sharing. This guitar would sell for at least double the price if it were in Los Angeles or New York.

Alamo Montclair 2565 tube amp in Glendale CA for $175

I am not a huge fan of the Alamo amps in general due to their notoriously spotty build quality, however these Montclairs are usually a pretty good deal especially if you find one that has been well cared for and maintained over the years.

There are several variations in the tube circuit of these amps ranging from a semi-copy of the Fender Princeton Reverb up through a completely hybrid circuit in the later 1970's. This listing makes it hard to tell but it may be the version with the 5AR4 rectifier and a single 12AX7 in the preamp section. Since it is a single-channel AB circuit this means that the reverb would have to be solid state not tube driven (or run off the speaker transformer like an early Ampeg).

Definitely worth at least taking a look - could be a nice studio or bedroom amp. Just don't expect a Deluxe Tweed.

The guitar in this sellers listing appears to be a late 1960's Goya Model N-21, all Mahogany Concert sized acoustic made in Sweden by the Levin company. I don'tknow what he is talking about as far as the guitar retailing online for $310.99 (LOL!) but the unique fret markers along the edge of the fingerboard are a dead giveaway to a vintage Swedish made Goya. Compare it to the pic in the 1967 Goya Catalog below - looks like the same guitar.

Sounds like this seller is a pawn shop.

Ampeg Gemini I tube amp in Stockton CA for $250

This seller is offering a vintage Ampeg Gemini 1 for $250. If you are in the Stockton area you might want to check it out. I believe these are about 30 watts with two independant channels and Reverb and Tremolo. The tube lineup on these Gemini's tends to vary depending on the model year. Sometimes 6V6's, sometimes 7591's and a few with 7868's. I've always loved the look of these with the chrome logo, stovetop knobs and Diamond Blue Tolex.

I once owned an Ampeg Gemini which was similar but 50 watts with only one channel. I purchased it from a seller in Woodstock NY and the legend was that it had belonged to John Sebastion and been used on some tracks on The Band's Songs from Big Pink. It was a great Surf amp and could really get that CCR-type swampy crunch and twang.

Old Kraftsman (Kay) Archtop acoustic at Jersey Shore for $175

I am always suspicious when a seller says "This guitar has not been played much at all" about a 50 year old guitar. Really? Why not? Must be something wrong with it, correct?

In the case of this old Kraftsman I am not so sure. It looks as nice as I can imagine one of these looking after so many years.

Just about all of these pre-1970 USA made acoustics are solid wood guitars (not laminates). They have nice "woody" tone because the wood they used tended to be thicker than their higher end cousins like Gibson and Martin who used more complex manufacturing methods to get beter projection and resonance out of thinner more responsive wooden bodies.

Of course a Gibson ES-335 is an all laminate semi-hollow guitar and nobody ever complained much about those, LOL.

This one is definitely a looker. Doesn't have a silly "faux flame" and instead appears to have a nice finish and perhaps even a fully bound neck.

This is an older listing and there is a good chance it is sold. However, as regular readers of this blog know, the goal here is not so much to jump online and try to buy this guitar as quickly as possible. My real goal is to educate, entertain and hopefully picque your interest in these vintage instruments that might otherwise have escaped your notice. I guarantee that if you keep your eyes open you will find another Kay or Old Kraftsman or Harmony acoustic. If you see one in a pawn shop or local music store, pick it up and try it. Vintage 1950's Old Kraftsman archtop acoustic guitar. The guitar is in excellent condition, no cracks, finish is really nice, very little checking, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, original white pickguard and black tuner buttons. There are two codes stamped inside the body, P-3, and N-15, I am not sure what they mean. Neck is straight, and action is fine all the way up the fingerboard, frets have no wear, body is 15 1/2" wide, and 3 1/2" deep, this guitar has not been played very much. Asking $175.

Bartell Contessa custom Combo tube amp in York PA for $475

I doubt this amp is still for sale (the listing is 5 weeks old) but I wanted to highlight it because you don't see these Paul Barth designed Bartell amps very often. That said I think the seller is being a bit over the top in comparing this to a 1965 Twin Reverb - since this is basically a 4 input tube PA amp. I suppose he may have modified the design to be more guitar friendly.

That said, Paul Barth is one of the early California engineers involved in electic guitar and amplifier design. He worked for National and Magnatone as well as helping found Rickenbacker. These Contessa's were made under contract to Hohner. They also made guitars and basses, all through the 1960's at their Riverside CA factory.

If you are looking for a blackface, 60's Twin reverb but don't want to pay $2000. . .
Here you go .What this is, is a very rare made in USA tube amp chassis installed into a new custom fitted 2x12 cabinet. The amp itself is called a Hohner Contessa Pa 55R. It is made by Bartell amplifiers of California in the mid 60's. The amp is all original and very powerful. It is powered by a pair of old RCA USA black plate 6l6's, as well as four smaller vintage tubes. It has a long reverb pan and the reverb sounds incredible, as does the butter cream tone of the amp. It gets loud and stays clear, or use the master volume to overdrive the amp at useable levels. The amp runs dead quiet at idle which would make it a great recording amp. This EASILY competes with any blackface tone. . .I have had quite a few different blackface and silverface Fenders so when I say it has killer tone, I like to think that I know what I am talking about. You will absolutely love this tone without the high pricetag.The reverb is the deepest I have ever heard. When cranked it all but overpowers the signal...total surf rock. I only keep it at about three on the knob and that is plenty for me.
It has the original long accutronics reverb tank.
As far as the brightness...I wouldn't at all consider this a dark sounding amp. I would actually say this is very close to blackface tone with a little more of a fender "brown" sound... but not dark like an old Silvertone or Ampeg.

The amp was designed by Paul Barth. . .he is credited as co-inventor of a little thing called. . .
The Electric Guitar!!!(maybe you've heard of it)
He was instrumental in the founding of Rickenbacker and Magnatone and helped create the first electric guitar pick-up for Rickenbacker called. . .the electric frying pan. Bartell was his later company.

The cabinet is new. Made of plywood with a natural wicker weave grill. The "Satellite" logo
Was added by me. . .it is off of an old car. The speakers are two Celestion G12H-90 watts.
All of the power you can throw at them. They have a very nice punch and tone.
The amp has four 1/4 " inputs with independent reverb on each channel. . .Fenders didn't even have that yet.
Included is an A/B footswitch to switch fron one channel set for your rhythm, to a second channel set for your overdriven lead.
You will absolutely LOVE this tone...The reverb is also foot-switchable.
Don't be just another Fender Lackey...blow them all away!
I would estimate this at about 50 watts or so...very loud!
Come on over and crank it up!
The original pine/black tolex head cabinet is included as well if you would want to put it back to original.

The 1485 was the most powerful tube-powered amp that Sears ever made available. At just a shade under 240 bucks, it was also the most expensive. For your money, you got everything that the Danelectro engineering department could bring you: reverb, tremolo, combo footswitch, ground switch, standby mode, spare 110v outlet, 10 tubes, 5 rectifiers... the only thing missing was an '11' on the volume dial. This amp was the MAX.
Jack White has given these amps popular exposure the past few years.

I almost never bother with the CL listings in New York or San Francisco because the vintage gear markets are so competitive there you can barely ever get a deal or move fast enough to land it. Plus there are so many resellers it clogs things up.

However, this amp caught my eye. It is a 1967 Revebrocket - one the best of Ampegs classic models and these amps are built like little tanks. The reverb circuit on these is driven off the output trannie so it is different than the Fender reverb but there are lots of cool tones to be found.

This seller is offering 3 smaller vintage tube amps, a Danelectro Cadet and a pair of Harmony H303's at very reasoanable prices. These all use 50C5 output tubes which put out about 4 or 5 watts total. They are also widowmaker circuits so whatever you do don't run any two of these through an A/B splitter box and stand barefoot in a puddle while blowing your harp into an old bullet mic mounted on a metal stand.

You laugh now but stranger things have happened. LOL!

I contacted this seller and he said he still has the amps and can drive to Lawrence to meet up with a potential buyer.

Here is another excellent tube amp for not a lot of money. These Weber kits are well crafted using high quality components and they usually cost a pretty penny. This is the vintage Fender Blackface Super Reverb circuit ala 1965. The speaker combo in this one is one of the best because it has two of the Weber Alnico 10's and two with ceramic magnets - that should give it lots of punch, with vintage tone and clarity.

I am sure that the "Snakeskin tolex" is what is keeping this amp from selling more quickly. I can't stand that look myself but some of you may be less offended aesthetically.

Fender 1982 (Rivera) Twin Reverb II Amp in Marina Del Rey for $500

Here is a very nice serious gigging amp for not a lot of money. These Fender Twin Reverb II amps were part of the last of the hand wired (non-PCB) tube amps to come out of the old Fullerton Plant. Designed by Fender's then Chief of Engineering Paul Rivera this was part of the line of well-thought out channel switching amps that included the Super Champ, Princeton II, Concert Reverb (aka Concert II) and the Twin Reverb II. I had a 1983 Concert Reverb for many years and I can attest that it was a monster with a wide range of great tones and a stellar clean channel along with excellent tube reverb.

This Twin is a 105 watt 2 x 12 combo amp with an addded gain channel and mid-boost as well as the standard Fender Twin Clean Channel and a nice tube driven reverb (there is no tremolo on any of these Rivera era amps). Don't expect Marshall or mesa Boogie tone from the lead channel on this amp. It is better suited to creating a contoured boosted lead tone similar to an overdrive pedal (but with tube saturation). The amp weighs 75 lbs and gets very loud. $500 is a terrific price for this much tube amp - a new Rivera Chubster would run you triple that and it would only be 40 watts.

As far as I can tell, in playing condition, it's worth between $300 - $400.

This estate sale person is selling several Fender Strats and a Tele for some reasonable prices. They all look pretty nice and well cared for and have original hard cases, etc. 1984 was right about the time that Fender was taken over by its employees and they moved the plant from Fullerton to Corona. These are not the cheaper style "Smith Era" Strats you sometimes see from that period. They are regular 3 knob Stratocasters with the standard input jack etc.

$650 is a very nice price for a Strat from this period (especially if it turns out to be one of the Vintage Series).

Found this pic of Elvis in his Army uniform playing a Danelectro U2. this pic is from a session he did on June 10-11, 1958 with Chet Atkins and Hank Garland so the guitar must have belonged to one of them. The King had just gotten out of the army so he was still proudly wearing his uniform everywhere he went. Great pic. They also had the studio recording log from the session and it lists the 4 songs they recorded and all the musicians involved in the session. The log lists Elvis as "Leader and Guitar" so there is a good possibility he actually played this guitar on at least one of the four tracks. - JC

Vintage 1965 Supro Tremoverb Amplifier. Made by Valco, this 5-8 watt tube amp can really wail. This amp uses a single 6V6 power tube, a 5Y3 rectifier and four 12AX7s to put out 5-8 W through a 10" Jensen speaker. The amp is in very good condition with new tubes & a standard 3-prong cord installed. This model has reverb and tremolo although the Reverb does not currently work, the effects are footswitchable. There are three inputs, one of which accentuates the treble frequencies. There is pitting on the control panel, but the tolex and grill cloth are clean with only a few scrapes & scuffs visible in the photos. This amp may already be sold since it was a Dec 2nd listing but I thought I'd highlight it anyway, just in case. The 3203 Artist head came out in the late 80's when Marshall was still building all their stuff like a tank in England. These amps are not known for their clean tones but some owners testify that they can clean up very nice especially if you put an EQ in the effects loop.

Just like Leo Fender's Music Man amps, the 3203 Artist hybrid gets it right by using a real tube phase invertor as well as all tube output power to get the saturated rock tones we all love.

I never heard of this band before but after seeing this video I checked them out and they are pretty darn cool. Total Nerd Rock with a serious artsy aggressive edge - kind of remind me of Muse but more artsy and nerdy. This is a really great video - they have another great video with Gary Numan singing that involves an escalator - extremely entertaining band. - JC

Original condition Epiphone Wilshire regularly sell for $2K and higher. This one has been refinished and had the tuners and tailpiece replaced however it has all the original electronics and the refin appears to be a very nice job indeed. All that said you'd be hard pressed to find a guitar like this one for a better price. These are certainly cool alt rock guitars with a lot of built in prestige and mojo.

BTW - this one does not have the "cheap amp" volume and tone knobs that appear on some old Wilshires, displaying instead for the nicer original Gibson style flush concave knobs.

For sale a beautiful vintage 1964 Epiphone Wilshire serial # 221595 made at the Gibson Kalamazoo Plant, USA. It has the original Gibson mini humbuckers that just sound amazing. In the 1990's it had the neck reset by Toru Nittono. Toru is a luthier who has built guitars for Carlos Santana, Coco Montoya as well as repairs and setups for Tom Petty, Robben Ford among others.
He also replaced the bridge with a Gotoh bridge and stop tail piece and the tuners with locking tuners. It was then refinished by Wilkens Guitar Finishes.
The neck is straight as an arrow and plays great. This guitar has a real cool creamy, fat tone and lots of sustain. All the electronics work perfectly and the guitar is ready to gig. Some of the screws are not original, the strap pegs and the truss rod cover have been replaced. There is a crack on the pickguard by neck pickup (see pic) but it effects nothing. There is no case.
So as you can see the guitar has been through some changes in it's nearly 50 years in existence. It's strong points are its playability, tone and the finish. If your looking for vintage tone and guitar you can play now this is it. Thanks for looking.

This is labeled a Tosca which was a dealer who Supro made this guitar for and this one has the Original Tosca logo on the headstock!! Powerful Supro Pickup in gold tone. This seller is offering his "gigging amp," a 1482 that's been professionally modified with a Fender 5E3 type tone circuit and a filter cap selector switch to give it three different gain options. The speaker baffle upgrade is a plus since a cheap original baffle is one of the downsides of these amps when stock (they can rattle at higher volume). The look is altered a bit by the speaker "grate" but I understand the choice. Nice amp for a nice price.

1960's Silvertone Model 1482 all-tube guitar amplifier. Tubes appear to be original except I replaced the 12AX7s. Original Fisher speaker.

Modifications performed by technician include:
- New "orange drop" coupling caps
- New cathode resistor
- Tone control modified to "Fender 5E3" circuit
- Upgraded 3 prong power cord
- Cathode bypass capacitor switch to switch between .22uf and .47uf cap and no cap on the instrument channel. This modification provides for added overdrive. The .22uf is standard Fender style cbc on most preamp circuits. The hole in the chassis used was the second instrument channel input jack. The hole was drilled out slighly to fit the switch.

A custom schematic of these mods is included, and reversing the mod is easily done - but I dont think you will want to!

I believe the filter caps were replaced, but I can not confirm. The amp has no hum, an indication they were replaced.

Modification I performed:
Upgraded 3/4" plywood speaker baffle. Creates more solid improved tone. The original "diamond cut-out" baffle is included.

The original back panel does not sit-in flush due to the thicker baffle.
A custom-made back panel with cutout for speaker magnet is included.
Cabinet covering is in good condition with some fraying on corners.

This was my main gigging amp 2-3 gigs/month 2009-2010, and it performed very well.

I doubt the previous owner would have taken the effort and expense to do all this if the amp didn't sound pretty damn awesome.

Fender Pro Reverb w/ AB763 Circuit in Portland for $500

You would have to play this amp to decide for your self but everything about its pedigree tells me it should sound as good as the seller says. This must have been a 1970's model. The Pro Reverb is traditionally a 40 watt amp so it is really not the same as a Twin Reverb but lower wattage means warmer tube tone at lower (i.e. more reasonable) volumes. Some of the later Pro Reverbs did bump up to 70 watts so this could be one of those. Either way it should be a two 6L6 power tube circuit similar to a Super Reverb.

The amp looks very nice in the pics. It has decent speakers and I love the foldback legs. I don't see why they added the Twin Reverb Panel but perhaps it was a personal choice.

Definitely worth a look. I am a fan of the Pro Reverb myself.

Why I love Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix may be the most iconic of all guitar players - but IMO he is also one of the most approachable. From my first exposure to his music via the studio recordings - to the dozens of live recordings and interviews - I have always found him to be incredibly likeable as a person. This simple little record of him playing a Zemaitis 12 String is a perfect example (note that Tony Zemaitis would have been a little known 35 years old luthier at this point and far from the electric guitar making legend he became via his association with Ron Wood, etc.)

Compare the persona of this "legendary guitarist" with any other past or current guitar gods and see if you agree. I can't think of anyone I'd rather have over for tea and a little Sunday morning jam Session than this inimitable blues man.

The tragedy of his loss at age 27 is incomparable. Only Duane Allmann at age 24 came close but you can't really compare Duane and Jimi. There will never was and never will be a musician like Jimi Hendrix.

Guild Thunderbird Tube amp in Boston area for $300

The Thunderbird was Guilds version of the Fender Pro Reverb. It has Dual 6L6 power tubes for about 50 watts, Tremolo and Reverb. I don't know much about Guild amps but my quick research tells me that this seems like a unique example because it has the Cabinet and speaker configuration of a "Version 2" Thunderbird but the Face panel and chassis appear to be from the earlier Version 1. I suppose it could be a transition model.

These amps are well liked by players that own them and they fly way below the radar. If this is a Version 1 chassis then it would probably have the "can reverb" instead of the full "pan reverb" of the later model. Check it out:

C'mon - you know you want it! Thought your 1970's Twin was a mutha to haul around? How 'bout this bad mammajamma? Of course if you've got a roadie (or a girlfriend) to lug your gear for you then just go for it. They'll curse the day you were born! This would make a nice pairing with an Ampeg SVT guitar amp. LOL!

In all seriousness - Quad Reverbs are both rare and cool - but oh so hard to fit in the back of your Scion TC. However if you can just park it and plug it in (at a rehearsal space or at a club or recording studio as a house amp) you get a heck of a lot of serious guitar tone for not much money. Compare this to a 1970's Marshall head and 4x12 cabinet and you'll see that it is only about 1/3 the price.

Too bad the seller won't ship it... what a wimp!. LOL!

Fender 1989 USA Stratocaster in Middleton OH for $400

This seller appears to be some kind of commercial dealer in OH and they are selling this nice 1989 USA Blackie for $400 - a crazy cheap price for a Corona Strat. The locking tuners give it the appearance of a Strat Plus but it has the regular pickups (not Lace Sensors) so this is a straight USA Stratocaster.

I am tempted myself but personally I hate black guitars. Don't ask me what is going on with that pickguard - some funky shape happening around the volume knob0.

Cool Japanese J-160 type Acoustic with Pickup in Louisville KY area for $125

This is a pretty cool old Japanese acoustic from what I can see. It looks like a cross between a Gibson J-160e and a Fender Sonoran. The neck looks like real mahogany rather than the usual laminated strips and the top may be solid spruce - or it could be laminate - impossible to tell from a photo.

Either way this is a pretty unique guitar. The pickup and controls all look original. I can't recall ever seeing one of these before. This may have been one of the Kents sold in Canada.

I am selling a Vintage Japanese guitar that looks to be a Teisco, but could possibly be a Kent.
The guitar has a single coil magnetic pickup with a volume and tone control mounted on the body.
There is no logo to show the brand, but there is a Japanese figure inside the sound hole.
The guitar plays really good. That combined with the vintage aged wood makes for a really good sounding guitar.
All of the white trim on the guitar has aged to a really nice cream color. The tuners work well, and the frets are not worn down.

Overall, this is a great guitar, and a nice collector's piece for those of you who are interested in vintage Japanese guitars.
I know one thing: vintage Japanese guitars are my favorite. I don't want to part with this one, but times are tough, and business is business.
Let me know if you're interested, and I'll let you know where I'm at so you can come try it out and potentially buy it. Even if you don't think it looks great, you'll love it when you play it.
Personally, I think it looks great, but like I said, I like old vintage Japanese guitars. This one definitely has that classic vibe that you're sure to love.
All I'm asking is $125 because I want this to be accessible to more people, even if they don't have a lot of money to spend.

1960 Harmony Montclair acoustic archtop near Fresno CA for $160

There are lots of Harmony and Kay F-hole Archtops for sale around the country but the Harmony Montclair is a fairly rare-bird so it is worth considering. The original Montclairs from 1955-1959 had a bizarre unique metal binding and garnish called "harmometal." The seller says 1960 and that would make sense since it has the standard plastic binding (1959-1965) and it is still a nice and fairly unique guitar. Most owners enjoy the looks, sound and playability of these funky modernistic mid century American guitars.

Note: Don't confuse this with the Harmony Monterey - a different and much more commonly available model.

Original 1962 Strat in Pasadena for $10K - incl Gruhn Appraisal

You won't see me highlighting a lot of $10K guitars on this blog but this one rates an exception.

The seller is quoting from a George Gruhn appraisal of this specific guitar which I would expect you would receive with the instrument. The seller calls it a "possible old refin" while Gruhn's appraisal refers to it as a possible factory custom color - so that matter would have to be determined.

Night Ranger was a pretty big band there for a while back in the late 1980's and they still tour. You remember Sister Christian. Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis were the main guitar players - I think Brad played the Strats and Jeff played either Dean or Hamer guitars - but they've also had other studio and live guitar players over the years.

The $25K appraisal must have been from a high market period a few years back but it will get back up to that again someday. The asking price on this is very reasonable.

Nice Strat - certainly from one of the best years IMO.

1962 Fender Stratocaster.
Neck stamped 2SEP62B. SN#802XX. Rosewood "Slab" fingerboard. Olympic White body possible old refin. Original mint green pickguard with copper shielding underneath. Neck possible old overspray worn smooth on back. First four frets expertly refretted.
All three pickups original, although neck pickup was swapped out for a hotrails, and then replaced with original.
Volume potentiometer replaced in 1976. Both tone pots are original. Mostly original cloth-shielded wiring. Newer 5-way selector. Original 3-way is in the case. Non-original Fender 70s bridge and replacement trem bar.
Comes with later 60's Fender case with extensive tour badges and stickers.

This guitar was purchased by a professional musician in 1976 at Leo's Music in Oakland, CA. He toured and recorded with this strat as his main instrument for 45 years, and has recording credits with the band Night Ranger. This vintage strat was played onstage by Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.
This is a fantastic vintage '62 strat - very responsive and amazingly quiet. It has shared stages and tour buses with rock legends.

From George Gruhn's appraisal:

"The guitar described below is, in our opinion, a Fender Stratocaster model made in the year 1962.

Description: The serial number is consistent with a 1962 manufacture date as is the neck stamp 2 JUN 62 B. We have been provided the following description: "The neck pickup was swapped out for a hotrails pickup for several years, but was replaced back. No additional routing was done. The 3-way switch was replaced by a 5-way, but is still with the instrument. Trem bar is a newer replacement. Case is a later 60's Fender case. Otherwise, I believe the instrument is original." This instrument shows moderate playing wear, especially on the back. It has custom color white finish which would give it added collector's item appeal. With the exceptions described by the owner, it appears to be in original condition. As is typical of the model for the period in which it was made, it features a "thick slab" rosewood fingerboard on a maple neck with "spaghetti logo" peghead decal, Kluson Deluxe tuners, greenish-white beveled-edge laminated pickguard, tremolo bridge, and typical Stratocaster electronics, hardware, and ornamentation.

Current market value: $25,000 (twenty-five thousand dollars)."

Another First - Kimberly Fire Bird (Teisco) sells for $2225 on eBay on Oct 11th

I know I've been highlighting a lot of these Teisco eBay sales lately but I believe that this is all related to what we do hunting for deals on Craigslist because I have seen this exact same guitar for sale on Craigslist within the last two years (for about $250) and I didn't even mention it because these hollow Japanese guitars are nearly worthless as players - they usually sound and play just awful. And they feedback like crazy (not the good kind of feedback the low swelling kind that makes them impossible to play out with live).

Apparently that is irrelevent now to collectors who are simply buying them up based on scarcity. I will admit these green Kimberly FireBird are few and far between.

So be aware of what the "collectibility" aspects are of Teisco's and you can help with your guitar collections by snatching up the more rare of the Japanese junk guitars.

If playabiity were the key to their value thn the Silvertone Sharkfin Teiscos would be the most valuable - but that is not the case. Here is a short list of what is being collected these days:

* Teisco/Kent/Zimgar SS-4L
* Teisco May Queen
* Teisco Spectrum 5 (rare Stereo guitar)
* Teisco/Domino EV-2T and EV-3T Phantom type guitars
* Teisco Teardrop (Vox copy) models

There is also some heavy activity going on in the Zenon and Teico Gold Foil pickup guitars. They've doubled in price in the past year. Knowledgeable players know that the gold foils with the screw poles on the outside are far superior to the other versions (which have magnetized rubber instead of real alnico magnets) but that hasn't stopped a minor frenzy in buying and selling of all things Gold Foil. The great (and stupid) irony is that the Teisco gold foil pickups were made as ultra cheap copies of the great sounding Dearmond Gold Foils and they now sell for almost the same price on the vintage market. From the glorious late 1950's comes this Magnatone 415 "Bass amp." Get this: It has 25 watts of pure tube output and four 8-inch speakers. Think it might sound good for guitar?

This model Magnatone does not have the patented "True Vibrato" circuit - just simple volume and tone controls. But I bet it sounds gorgeous.

Fender 1972 Pro Reverb and MIM Telecaster for $800 total in Los Angeles area

If I am reading this ad correctly, this seller is offering both the Pro Reverb and the Fender Telecaster for $800 total. That's a good deal since the Pro Reverb is probably worth that much alone.

A 1972 Fender Pro Reverb is a terrific find and this one looks pretty darn nice. The Pro is basically a Super Reverb with a pair of 12 inch speakers instead of four 10's. It will be much lighter than a Fender Twin and has a more useable volume range for most gigs.

That's a good looking Telecaster as well. I dig that ashtay bridge cover with the two tone sunburst. It gives it a nice vintage look.

Saw this 1969 Harmony H-168 up for bid on the Bay and it appears it isn't get any serious attention. I recently bought an H-162 for a bit over $100 and I'm quite happy with that guitar. This H-168 is different than mine in that it has the "pumpkin" stained solid Spruce top and darker stained Birch back and sides - it also has a "mustache" bridge, bound neck and body and the 6-on a side less common headstock - which some people really like. Neat little vintage acoustic (40+ years old) for not a lot of cash.
