Here is one of those cool local finds for somebody in the area. This seller is offering an old Harmony H165 solid Mahogany acoustic guitar for only $20. This was one of the most popular American made guitars for many years. The Headstock logo indicates this one is pre-1968, probably from the early to mid 60's. Put light strings on it and she will play well. Mason City/Dumont is in the North part of Iowa.

As I have your blog bookmarked, I was checking in one day while on vacation in the midwest & found this post. Dumont wasn't far so I called the number & it was still available. I went by & picked it up on my way home to CA.
ReplyDeleteNo markings whatsoever, but the strip-tuners are in great shape. A couple of adjustments here & there & i'm pretty sure this thing will be a good player. Even with the nasty corroded strings, this thing sounds good so far. It looks to have a laminate top, maybe ply like my FG's, but i'm not the authority. The cigarette burn on the PG is a nice touch. Also, it has a nice tort binding around the body under all the dirt.
The seller said her husband, who is 45 yrs old, played with this thing as a child. I'll have some investigative work to do.
Thanks for the blog btw.
Nice score. I was in Iowa at a writers workshop at UofI right after I posted this but I didn't have a car so I couldn't do any guitar shopping. Amazing that it found its way back to California anyway. Thanks for sharing your experience.
ReplyDeleteHi Jim,
ReplyDeleteFound the faint number inside the body last night. It's a H162. Might take the bridge down an 1/8" or so to get the action better. Other than that i'm pretty stoked to have scored it. Gonna finish cleaning the frets & putting some Fret Dr. on the board tonight & string it up with some Martin silk/steel I have laying here.
Great blog! Keep it up.
