Best looking Chinese RI of a Vintage Guitar yet?

I hadn't seen these Wilshires with the Tremotone tailpiece until now and I gotta say - this is a very cool looking guitar.   I haven't played one but it certainly has the looks you'd want for Indie or alt rock.

Obviously Eastwood has had a lock on the serious vintage RI's from China but it looks like Epiphone is making a move as well - and the nice part is you are actually playing an Epiphone guitar not a copy.

Curious to hear your thoughts or if anyone has played one of these.  - JC

1990 Strat Plus in Venice, CA for $650

This seller is offering a nice deal on a good looking Arctic White 1990 Stratocaster Plus.  I called and spoke with him and he is the original owner; he bought it new back in 1990.  He said it's been sitting unplayed since he has stopped playing guitar the past few years but it is in excellent shape and is 100% original.

The Strat Plus is a unique model that differs from the Standard and the Deluxe in several ways.  It was made from 1984 until some time in the 1990's and if you want to learn more about the history here is a website that will tell you as much as you could ever want to know:   FENDER STRAT PLUS INFO

The seller of this guitar is aware that he is already offering it at a good price so don't bother calling and trying to lowball or nickel and dime him.  Yes, the handle on the tweed case is broken but that is not an expensive fix and he is already discounting the guitar.  The first person who shows up with $650 cash will get themselves a nice guitar at a nice price.   Interestingly, the seller lives on a street called Electric Avenue.

Kay Penncrest acoustic in Syracuse, NY for $75

This seller is offering a guitar that probably cost $30 brand new back in the 1950's or 60's but check it out.  A Kay built Penncrest (for J.C. Penney) with a solid Spruce top and mahogany (it appears) back and sides.    Now, I would not expect the neck or fretboard to be anything approaching awesome but hey - it's only $75 bucks!

The use of a bolt on neck on an acoustic is not so radical or weird - it's been done by a half dozen different guitar makers over the years, including Fender.

Note:  this guitar is located in Memphis New York (near Syracuse) - not Memphis TN.

1965 Klira Jazzmaster style electric in Granby VCT for $550

This seller is offering a German made Jazzmaster copy from 1965.  I have no idea if this is a decent sounding or playing guitar but look at all that chrome!  LOL!  Very cool looking guitar with lots of bling.  I've never seen one of these before but of course I am far from an expert on European guitars.  Neat listing.

I can't comment on the price other than to say I don't know what he is basing it on.  But it is very shiny!

Update:  It appears the seller is correct about this being a Klira because I found another Klira model on the Guitarz website that has the identical tailpiece and pickup combination - though on a different body.  here is the link:  http://guitarz.blogspot.com/2011/10/vintage-klira-in-red-mosaic-finish.html

Vintage 65 German Made "Jazz Master" - $550 (Granby, CT)

Date: 2012-08-24, 2:41PM EDT

Hello: What we have here is a German made "Jazz Master" styled guitar. The guitar has been refurbished and identified by a local guitar tech...as a "Klera" Brand guitar made in the 1960ies. There are no brand markers. The guitar was identified through the guitar tech's experience and the study of pictures. Guitars made in Germany...such as Framus, Hoffner, and Klera often traded and used the same parts. Although this does look similar to some japanese models of the era, these parts are a higher quality and reflect german manufacturing. The only marking on the gutiar is on the inside and it reads "November 11th 1965".

The guitar is in excellent working condition. All electronics are fully functional. The tremelo has a tremendous action...similar to a bigsby. The neck and fretts were in rough shape, so the finger board was re-leveled and new medium jumbo fretts were installed as was a new bone nut. The neck was given a "compound radius" and has a tremendous feel. It is a very thick neck. The guitar is attached to the body through machine screws and is a very tight fit. The body is believed to be mahagonny as is the neck- which has a rosewood fingerboard. The tuners work well. The guitar was given a schaller roller bridge as the original bridge was lost in time. All and all the guitar is in very good condition and has been rehabbed professionally. There are a few dings and age lines in the finish. The guitar has many tonal switching possibilities and sounds killer and unique. No case is included with this guitar.

Looking for something vintage, different, and cool...This may be your next space flight.

Offers will be entertained... Please- no low ballers...I'm looking for a respectable transaction.

Gretsch 6003 "Jimmie Rogers Folk Singer" Acoustic Guitar in Leonardtown MD for $425

This seller is offering a Gretsch 6003 acoustic which is sometimes referred to as the Jimmie Rogers Folk Singer Model.  These were not expensive guitars - they sold for about $100 back in the 1960's - but they are USA built by Gretsch in Brooklyn NY and they are made of solid Spruce and Mahogany.

I've never played one so I can't vouch for the sound but there are some comments about them on the Gretsch sites around the Web.   I don't think I've ever highlighted one on my blog before so here it is. - JC

Vintage Goya/Levin Swedish made acoustic in Lancaster, PA for $60

This seller is offering a 1960's acoustic made in Sweden.  The pics on this guitar don't tell me much other than it could be either a Levin or a Goya (both were made in Sweden).  The only other signal to its heritage is the belly bridge which resembles one of the Goya's that were originally imported and sold by Martin before they shifted the Goya line's production to Japan.

The original Levin acoustics were nicely built guitar - certainly one of the better mid-range European labels from that period.

Univox Coily 1960's Japanese 335 copy in Central New Jersey for $200

The Univox Coily is an interesting and fun MIJ 335-style semi-hollow out of the Matsumoku factory similar to the Aria, Ventura and Bruno models of the same period.  Pickups vary on these but this one has the "staple" humbuckers originally created to mimic the Hofner pickups on Japanese copies of their guitars.

This particular guitar needs a pickup selector switch.  Not a major repair but not completely simple either.

Note:  These Univox's have very thin necks so if you have small hands you may like it.

ELECTROMUSE for $349 BIN

Nice Chicago Blues Box similar to a Harmony H200 or Premier 120.  Electromuse was in some way related to Rickenbacker.  Who can resist a guitar amp with a "brilliance" switch LOL! - JC

Vintage Electromuse 10A tube guitar amp 40's or so 2 6V6's Valco Supro

RICKENBACKER M-11 - classic early guitar amp model that goes back to the 1930's.  Some believe an inspiration for the Fender Deluxe.  Hal Lindes, former Rhythm Guitar for Dire Straits described a Rick M-11 like this:  "This is without question the best amp I've ever had the pleasure to play through. It utilizes a mixture of the Tweed Deluxe and the Tweed Bassman components which allow the pure tones of the guitar to sing in an uncolored and totally natural amplified state. I have never come across another amp like it."- JC

Kay N-6 flat-top acoustic in Medford, NJ area - seller will trade for MIM Strat

This seller is offering what appears to be a 1950's or 1960's Kay N-6 acoustic for a reasonable price or trade for a MIM Strat or Tele or similar electric.   Model numbers can often be confusing on Kay guitars and the model N-6 appears on both flat top and archtop acoustics as well as a few F-hole electric models.  Just looking at this guitar in the photos shows me a solid Spruce Top and a fully bound neck and body and a bound soundhole which would at least put this on par with a Harmony H-162.  It is a nice looking vintage instrument and I would love to hear from someone who has played these to give some idea of the tone.

Beautiful Kay N-6 flat top acoustic from the late early '60s. It was made in the USA and was not a student model. This rig fell into one of Kay's nicer lines. The guitar was purchased from the original owner who hardly strummed a chord. There isn't any pick swirl or signs of heavy use anywhere. Literally, everything is in great condition and I just set it up with a set of Martin Medium/lights, cleaned the frets up etc. The original tuners hold tune perfectly. It really sounds and plays awesome. The finish is beautiful too, it a sweet tobacco sunburst bound by a western style binding. It has kind of a desperado/outlaw vibe to it. It is perfect for picking or blues etc. The action is low and neck is straight. Most players know that is very hard to find on these old Kay/Harmony acoustics. It really would be a prime candidate for recording or playing out. I'd prefer to trade this guitar for a Mexican Stratocaster, Telecaster, or a decent electric. Or make me a cash offer, but I'd prefer a trade.

Gibson Les Paul Classic 3-Pickup w Bigsby and P90's at GC in Nashville for $899

When was the last time you saw a real Gibson Les Paul Classic (not a 60's Tribute, Special or Studio) with three pickups and a full size Bigsby tailpiece for under $1K?    Not recently I am sure.

This used Les Paul they have for sale at the Nashville Guitar Center has been heavily modified from it's original state and I have not played it or spoken to anyone at the store about it.  But that said, I would expect that if someone was going to pull the pickups out of a Classic (they came stock with 496T and 500T Ceramic pickups) and replace them with P90's as two of these are - I'd think they would use some pretty darn good pickups - wouldn't you?  Maybe Gibsons or Fralins.  I can't tell by looking but the Bridge Humbucker in this guitar is definitely not the stock 500T - it is a rails humbucker of some sort.

The mods don't stop there, though.  The original 3-way switch has been replaced by three mini switches - I'd guess that they turn each pickup on and off, which gives you every possible combination of the three.   And then of course there is the Bigsby and they chose a full blown B7 (ala Neil Young's Old Blackie) which just looks oh so cool giving this Les Black Les Paul some serious old school retro rock and blues appeal.

That's a lot of guitar for $899 (+ tax and shipping).   It's hard for me to resist - how about you?   - JC
