Unusual Vintage Les Paul Standard in Fresno CA for $1500

I called this seller and she sounds honest and legit - but some things about this Les Paul just don't add up. The serial number for one thing - it would put this as a 1964! Gibson didn't make Les Pauls from 1961 until 1968 (they only made the SG body shape with a Les Paul name for a few years in the early 60's). This would be a very rare bird indeed.

I asked her to verify the serial and some other info and she said she would take more pictures and text them to me - so I will post if they arrive.

Needless to say after having wasted $885 on guitar scams in August I won't be biting on this one. I suspect it is some kind of a hybrid, refinished or reworked guitar. Of course if it is a refinished 1961 it would still be worth a fortune. Otherwise it is at least $20K under fair market value. And such a guitar really should not exist at all.

Much too good to be true. IMO. - JC

Harmony 1941-45 Singing Cowboys Acoustic in Southbay area of LA for $60

The ultimate wall hanger acoustic for a great price - these guitars never played all that well to begin with but they are very cool to have around and this one has a great looking stencil. The Wooden tailpiece clearly designates it as a WWII axe.

LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE - 1956 Harmony H44 in Dallas - OUCH!!

Had a bad month in August. Thought I had found a great deal in Dallas TX on a 1956 Harmony H44 Stratotone (yeah one of those) that his "Dad had left him" being sold for "the Best Offer" and the seller bit on $600 + shipping. We went back and forth and he ended up taking a straight $600 when I realized I couldn't swing the extra $50 for shipping that week(and that should have been a major red flag to me).

But of course I was blinded by VGL (Vintage Guitar Lust) and sent him the Cashier's Check for $600 - and I never heard from him again.

I won't be sending any money to Texas again for a long long time.

Please, learn from my mistakes dear ones... a few warning signs I ignored:

1 - Seller acted like he didn't know anything about the guitar and I was the expert.
2 - Seller said he "had an offer at $700" but that was from "a guitar store and I'd rather sell it to a player like you" (and I fell for that one too - sheeesh!).
3- I never actually spoke to the seller on the phone only over email (MAJOR ALERT!!)
4 - I was basically paying about HALF of the retail Vintage Market value for the guitar (this is a real heads up - greed on my part - the trap was set).

So keep those things in mind when dealing over the web. talk to the person on the phone - have an address and telephone number that you can trace - and if it sounds too good to be true - IT USUALLY IS! (though not always - but over the internet you have to defer to the likelihood of a scam).

Good luck out there.

Silvertone 1481 tube combo amp in Chattanooga TN for $180

This is the right price for a cool, rare and little known tube amp. The 1481 is the baby brother of the legendary 1482 - about half the wattage (7 or 8 watts) and cooler than any Fender Champ you'd have to pay twice the price for. Jensen C8R is a nice speaker too.

Kay Galaxy in SF Bay area for $300

This Kleenex Box pickup is the one to get on these old Kay's if you can find them. Don't expect to shred on these guitars and you won't be disappointed. This one seems like it needs a little love.

Harmony Master Archtop in Manassas VA for $129

I see these 1950's Harmony Archtops at ridiculously high prices all the time - I don't know who buys them for that much whenyou can find them for prices like this one - $129. And this one is in good shape with the original pickguard!

Of course the action is high... it is always high on these guitars. That's how they came form the factory. Toughen up! LOL!

All original vintage 1950s Harmony jazz box. These guitars did not have adjustable truss rods - - - non adjustable steel rod instead. The action is medium to high but it still plays pretty easily. It will begin to fret out above the 9-12th frets. You could pretty easily do a neck press and reset but I've decided it's not worth the investment for modest improvement in playability in upper registers. Great guitar for blues bits on home recording projects, etc. Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide lists these as $500+ guitars. Priced to move. No case. Will ship anywhere.

Vintage Teisco Tulip in good condition. All original. Neck is straight , low action,
plays good all the way up the neck, no fret buzz. Low profile frets. This guitar has
the strongest, best sounding pickups I've ever heard on a Teisco. This model is a
little different than most Teisco Tulips that you see. It has a solid mahogany body
and neck, two color sunburst instead of three, and a stamped aluminum pickguard
instead of plastic. Missing the vibrato arm and headstock logo. Guitar has typical
wear and tear that you'd find on a 40+ year old guitar. Comes with soft shell case.
