These Epi Scroll guitars have always been of interest to me ever since I saw a video of Rory Gallagher playing one live.* I could tell you a little bit about them but there is a video on Youtube of a gal who talks about every aspect of these guitars for 10 minutes so she can do a much better job than me. Here is a link to that video: EPIPHONE SCROLL VIDEO
An interesting fact is that you could buy these with factory installed Gibson pickups for an additional cost. Those models are listed as the SC-450G and they have what appear to be Gibson USA T-tops pickups.
*Note: After going back and looking at the video of Bullfrog Blues live on Youtube (RORY GALLAGHER BULLFROG BLUES) it turns out that may not be an Epiphone Scroll afterall. I actually cant Identify the guitar Rory is playing in that video - but it is not his usual Strat. if anyone can identify it I will appreciate it very much. - JC

I have a beautiful vintage Epiphone, from when Epiphone was making their own stuff, not just Gibson knockoffs. I've had this guitar for a long time and it plays great! Just restrung it and I hate to let it go. But I'm moving and don't have room for all the guitars. These normally go for 550-600 plus shipping on E-bay.

its a gretsch corvette with a p90 in the bridge
ReplyDeleteThe comments on the Rory video says it's a Gretsch Corvette with Gibson pickups.
ReplyDeleteGretsch Corvette?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Now that I look at it it is obvious. It sounds a lot like an SG Jr. and now that makes perfect sense. - JC
ReplyDeleteI got to play one of these at the Western NY Guitar Show this weekend. It was the next model up and was really a killer guitar. I was surprised at how heavy it was. Like an early 70s Les Paul. It was nicely balanced but it still had the feeling of being a Les Paul but not quite. The coil tap was a nice surprise.
ReplyDeleteThat is indeed a Gretsch Corvette. I had the pleasure of seeing Rory a number of times with his original band Taste as well as Rory billed as a solo act (I went to High School in the UK, 1969-1971). Rory used the Gretsch Corvette extensively for slide.
ReplyDeleteI had one of these Epiphone Scroll Model Guitars back in the 70's.
ReplyDeleteBought it New for about $150 back then. A friend of mine who played clubs in a band use to borrow it for gigs as he preferred it over his Gibson Explorer. It was an excellent guitar. Wish I had it today !!!
