1974 Gibson SG Standard in Greensboro SC for $900

This seller is offering something that caught my eye since most of the early 70's SG's you see for under $1K are the hideous "Deluxe" models with the cheapo Norlin pre-wired control panel setups.  This guitar is a "real SG" with the nice block inlays, the florid inlay on the headstock and the T-top humbuckers (or maybe they are the "patent humbuckers" - post PAF).  It even has the smaller pickguard which some traditional SG lovers demand.  Either way it is a nice guitar with the only downside being the pair of added switches (coil tap?  phase?) which may or may not be a cool addition - depending on your taste and style.  - JC

1974 Gibson SG Standard - $900 (College Hill)

It's getting harder and harder to find 70's SG Standards today, especially in sunburst. I have a 1974 Tobacco Sunburst vintage Gibson SG that plays well and sounds amazing. The guitar is in good shape considering it has been played and gigged on since the 70's. Its my baby and I hate to get rid of it but I really need money to buy a car. Looking for a good home where she'll get some love and attention. $900

Please email me if you are interested and have any questions.

1958 Silvertone-Kay 620 Jumbo acoustic in Austin TX for $300

This seller is offering a Silvertone 620 which is indeed a rare jumbo sized acoustic with all solid woods from the late 1950's. The big block inlays on the rosewood fretboard put this guitar well above the average vintage Silvertone acoustic out there.  It even includes the original Kay-Silvertone chipboard case.

SILVERTONE 620 JUMBO ACOUSTIC 1958-59 - $300 (Georgetown-Austin)

For sale is a nice original Silvertone 620 Jumbo acoustic guitar. These are extremely rare as they were only available for one year between 1958 and 1959. This is the upgraded 618, with big block fret markers.

Made in America by Kay with a steel reinforced, slim, hard maple neck, hand polished spruce and mahogany, distinctive celluloid binding on the sound hole and top and bottom edges, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Also has the original Kluson Deluxe tuners in good condition, like the ones Gibson used in the 50's. Has the engraved "Silvertone" logo on the headstock.

Includes the original case.

Guitar has some light finish cracks but the wood is still solid. All original except for a new bone saddle.
Action is a bit high on the upper frets but fine for slide.

Richard Gere's 618 sold at auction last year for $875.

Asking $300.

1978 Gibson L6-S at GC in Langhorne PA for $499

I spotted this Vintage Bill Lawrence designed Gibson L6-S on the Guitar Center used gear site.  This black version of the L6-S Custom is less common than the all maple bodied model and it has a nice Ebony fretboard.  The listing implies that the pickups are not original but those still appear to be Bill Lawrence Super Humbuckers just without the metal covers.  Maybe a previous owner wanted to open them up to get more output since that was more the style in the 1980's.   This should be a real L6-S Custom with a set neck, not to be confused with the "Midnight Special" which had a bolt on.  The 6-position chicken head selector is the giveaway.  Nice guitar that has some very devoted fans over the years.  And the price is a very good deal.

Best Sounding Teisco Hollow Body I've heard in a long time - check it out

I am not a fan of the Teisco hollow body guitars since from my experience they rarely have anything close to decent intonation.  But this early EP-8 sounds pretty darn good in the hands of this jazz player.  This is not a common model - especially that neck in combination with those pickups (which were a Japanese variation on the DeArmond pickups) so it is rarity.  And it may have been well set up by a pro tech to get it to this level - but it shows that even the lowly Teisco can be quite musical in the right hands.  Kudos to this player.  - JC

Bill Nelson performs "Beyond These Clouds The Sweetest Dream" Live

Bill Nelson is one of the most "under the radar" guitar geniuses of all time.  He is also one of the most prolific composers in modern music having released nearly a hundred records mostly on small independent labels.

This song is incredibly simple and incredibly beautiful.  It is all in the heartfelt performance.  Bill is definitely unique and one for the ages.  I think his "The Love That Whirls" is one of the 20 greatest albums of all time.

Here he is for your pleasure:

Kay Style Leader in Hollywood CA for $400

This seller is offering a vintage Kay Style leader for $400.  The Style Leader is the fancier version of the more common "Value Leader" made by Kay and also sold as a Trutone and Old Kraftsman from the late 1950's thru the mid 1960's.  \

I've always thought the Style leaders were neat guitars with their copper accents.  This particular model has the nicer bound Kay neck with the three sets of double fret markers that shows up on a bunch of their guitars.  It should be thinner with more of a 1960's feel than the older "baseball bat" style necks on some other Kay electrics.

$400 is not cheap but it is in line with what many sellers are asking for these guitars nowadays. - JC

Magnatone Copy (Custom Built) tube amp in St. Paul Minnesota for $350

A reader spotted this Magnatone clone on CL in Minneapolis and it looks pretty interesting.  it looks like it might be a 260 copy though it is short one knob, but it does have most of the switches.  I asked the seller if it has a varister in the Vibrato circuit and he said he didn't know anything about the amp - he got it as a trade from a friend.  This may be a very high end custom build sicne those speakers appear to be Oxford Alnico's with the bell covers which would make them identical to the original Magnatone speakers from that period.
