These paragon's are very similar to a vintage Fender Bassman and they are flat out the best amop that ever came out of the Alama plant in San Antonio TX - and everyone knows it. Tube lineup is a couple 12AX7, 7199 phase invertor, pair of 6L6GT or 5881 power tubes and a 5U4 Rectifier. Why this guy is selling his for $175 I have no clue but all new tubes will cost $100 and you can replace the baffle and make a monster 40 watt 2x12 vintage guitar amp out of this combo - so what are you waiting for?

Are you sure this is all tube, I'm reading that amps of these vintage had a transistor preamp:

And who knows what other problems it may have if it "needs power tubes", also it's in carlsbad pretty far from SD... well, that's what I'm waiting for!
You are correct that several of the Alamo Amps had Solid State preamps or Diode Rectifiers - however I am pretty sure all the Paragon's are 100% tube. Of course Caveat Emptor - I am just pointing it out.
ReplyDeleteI just picked up a '63 Paragon off of Craig's List.
ReplyDelete1963 Alamo Paragon (Model 2567) with 2 chanels (Vibrato and Normal), 8 tubes, a 15" Utah speaker, chrome handle, perfect grillcloth, great tolex, jacks for a footswitch and extension speaker.... Size of the amp and layout of the controls on top are similar to a tweed bassman. Sounds like an AC-30.
Very rare, only a couple hundred with this configuration made in San Antonio that year. I only found one other guy on whole internet that had one, and he didn't know what it was... Also found a 1963 Alamo catalog online that had it in it. They changed it from the '62, and re-did it for '64, so one year only.
The guy I bought it from said it was his grandmother's, and that she used it to play organ at church. He had a hundred calls about it in the couple hours after he listed it and before I talked to him. He had it listed for $150, and a couple of people were on their way to his house to get it. I told him load it in the car and bring it over and I'd give him $300...
This is way rarer than my other amps, and sounds as nice as my '63 Deluxe Reverb or my '67 Super Reverb or any of my botique amps.
My 4th musical score off Craig's List in a little over a year. Usually I can go a couple of years without finding anything worth having, but times are tough and if you're right there when the listing goes up you can get some deals on Craig's List now. There are no deals on ebay, almost everything goes for what it is worth or more.
I'll send a pic when I shine it up and vacume the mouse turds from the back of the cabinet.
All the best,
Jim
